Dr. Stein was a native of Ohio before his medical training at St. Louis University and Washington university. He practiced in St. Louis before further training in military field medicine and tropical medicine while in military service. He joined the Menlo Medical Clinic in 1968 and practiced adult medicine, with an emphasis in endocrine and metabolic diseases, until retiring in 2001 to join the Executive Health Program. He holds a continuing appointment as Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine.
He and his wife Jane have been married thirty-nine years. They have two children, one working in public health and one in public policy. Dr. Stein's other interests include cosmology, observational astronomy, mathematics, and teaching.
